Michelle McColm was adopted at
4 months old and met her birth mother in 1987, at age 27.
McColm, like so many other adult adoptees, waited until her
adoptive mother passed away before pursuing her lifelong desire
to search for her birth family.
Out of her experience as a reunited
adoptee, McColm, a professional journalist, wrote Adoption
Reunions. McColm also brings three years' work in
adoption disclosure at a Canadian Children's Aid Society to
her manuscript, imbuing the work with authority and authenticity.
McColm worked to prepare "non-identifying information"
for adult adoptees and their birth families at the C.A.S.
Much of what she learned in this role is incorporated in her
chapter on searching, where she enlightens the unwary searcher
of possible pitfalls.
The personal experiences of McColm
and many other adoptees, and also of birth and adoptive parents,
before, during and after their reunions are shared in this
comprehensive guide to adoption reunions.
McColm continues to enjoy her
ongoing relationships with both her adoptive and her birth
families. As her reunion unfolds, many new feelings
and challenges continue to arise. But, she notes, "It's
the best thing I ever did for myself." Now that
she knows her history, she can move confidently into the future.
McColm has written and spoken
extensively on adoption issues. She is currently
researching her second book on the theme of adoption reunions.
